"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

This is one of 93 photos of Andy McCutcheon that are used in The New High-Intensity Training to illustrate the recommended exercises.

You guys have probably seen this so many times but for those like myself you haven't...here's a young Mike Mentzer without the moustache third guy along on the left.

Here's the link http://bodybuilding-pics.com/...Mentzer_55.html I hope this works, if not just let me know please and I will try and correct it.

Wow, just goes to show what extreem genetics can do for you....Even at a young age.

Study the picture carefully, even through they had good builds, the other 5 guys in the photo could train for the rest of their lives (with Arnold, Arthur Jones or Dr. Darden as their personal trainer)....Eat tons of food and the latest super-duper supplements...Fill their bodies with steroids...And they would never be able to reach the level of muscle development that Mentzer attained at 18 years old.

Those extremely long and thick muscle bellies aren't for sale at any price. They must be there when you are born.

Key takeaway....Next time pick different parents. It ain't fair, but who said that life is?

Good training!

Wow, the sheer genetics going on with that guy! Look at his right forearm compared with the left forearm of the guy next to him: Tree Trunk vs. Toothpick

And he claimed to never do direct forearm work!!!

The shoulders and pecs already look much like they would later.

Good Stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Ray Mentzer is on the left, second from, and to the extreme right looks like a young El Darden, but prolly isn't obviously. I think similar shots from the same day show a young Lou Ferrigno.

I think the Mentzer's were definitely not even 20 here, and definitely not yet on any drugs, but as is said, they have development which 99% of the population will never attain, no matter what.

It's a very clear example of the role of genetics, and why more than anything, you have to love the process, and not the potential end, because you really can't count on how you'll turn out.

I don't know where this photo came from , but one of the things I really liked about Raders' IronMan is that it covered small contests of all sorts and you can look back and see a 16 year old Arnold. Tom Platz as a teenager. Sergio ,Pearl , Scott etc. etc. as young men and how they developed throughout the years. Too bad all bodybuiding mags , now days, are just a bunch of crap.

Guys I apologise that the picture isn't bigger as it's somehow scaled down here but I do have the larger pic. Tommorrow I shal post the link to it.

Okay genetics right.

The guy on Mentzers left is twisted you can see because his nipples don't line up. Also look at his right hand which confirms as much(it's hanging lower than his left). Infact if you look closely it looks like his about to topple over onto Mike.

The guy on Mikes left might have beeter genetics but if this is his position of ease he's completely fucked. All the weight on 1 foot elevated shoulder, pronated shoulder girdle.

3 guys in the picture appear to have tight piriformis. The guy 2nd from left Ray Mentzer? Can't even keep his freaking head straight and his left foot is further out from his centre of gravity than his right.

Mike is the only one with a halfway descent posture which is also why you guys are probably thinking he has the longest pectoral muscles of some other daft BS.

Oh yes and check the position of the hands all the others are internally rotated bar Mike. Coincidence or Joe-incidence? You decide.

Also there's no pronation at all Mentzers ankles are as straight as well something really straight that was probably cut by a laser.

Not sure what you're getting at. Are you saying he had better coaching than the other guys?

BTW, you will see the straight-ahead toes/feet in many Mentzer pics from all different time periods.

That picture is a nice example how once you get to single digit body fat, you're only going to look like a bigger version of your current self if you bulk because you can't change your muscle shape. If arms are your weak point, add on 50 lbs of muscle and you will have bigger arms, but they'll still lag behind your other body parts.

No thats not true. You can weak point train. Of course if your primary goal is still basically to add muscle all over it probably won't work as well.

But you can still do it.

Too bad that many years later at the 1980 Olympia he was criticized for forgetting to keep his thighs contracted.

Weak point training can't give you longer biceps or lats with a lower insertion point. Like I said, you may get bigger, but still the muscle with a less than optimal shape, will still never develop as great as someone with better genetics.

How true. Ever notice that it's always the people with great genetics that say they don't matter.

Butters,
Adding 50 lbs of muscle as in your previous example or even just 50 lbs of bodyweight is going to help the athlete build larger arms.

This is formula that works, not just hypothetical; the Hoff knew about building big arms, have you read his blue book on it?

So.....one of the "five guys" is Ray Mentzer that would never be better than an 18 year old Mike Mentzer?? He would actually go on to be bigger than Mike. I don't think he ever achieved the aesthetics of Mike but he was certainly larger at his peak. I think you can predict overall shape but you can't predict overall growth. There is an early pic of Platz around that shows his thighs as toothpicks. I don't think baby pictures predict anything except maybe height and muscle shape.
