"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

It's not our traditional cuisine that has made people in the UK fat. It's actually quite the opposite. Emphasis on food that has in recently only become traditionally British.

Pizza - arguably made popular by our american friends, rather than italians. Popular in frozen or fresh format. Contains mostly carbohydrate with little nutrients.

Chinese food - Mostly carbohydrate again, only saturated in fat. And I said saturated in fat, not saturated fat. Mostly cheap vegetable oil.

Same goes for Indian, food. Most indian meals are carb rich - naan bread, rice, popadoms, and then the actually curry these days seem to contain more sauce saturated in fat, than meat.

Then there are the fast food chains - the multi-nationals.

On top of all this is the fact that good quality food in the UK is expensive. Why should I stop in and eat when I can go to a pub and have a burger and chips with a beer for ?5.00

That said the real issue we have in the UK is the mistaken idea that fat is bad. Because of this people gorge themselves on high carb foods under the mistaken belief they wont become fat because of it. Then in their attempt to shed fat all the food they eat is low fat. It's a viscious circle that will only get worse.

If people moved away from low fat foods covering everything from spreads, to yoghurts to ready meals, and moved back to tradtional meals our collective health would be better, and yes that does include traditional meals such as:

Fish and Chips
Bangers and mash and veg
Cottage Pie/Shepherds Pie and veg
Roast dinners
Traditional breakfasts.

What these meals do is provide basic nutrition, but they also should make it so the eater doesnt want anything afterwards. On the other hand, what I often see fat people do, is eat a low fat ready meal, pizza or something like that, only to spend the rest of the day grazing on anything from crisps, to chocolate bars, to cereal bars. In addition to this many people don't realize or appreciate how many empty calories their are in carbonated drinks and fruit juices. There are substantially less calories in the low percentage alcohol bitter I like to drink than in the equivalent volume of orange juice or non-diet coke.

The sad thing is negative news like this will on serve to reinforce the low fat/high carb diet hypothesis. It will only make the situation worse, which I do find very gloomy, particularly as many a layman will believe the misinformation fed to them provided it comes from a source of 'authority.'

thats very interesting. and for myself living in the u.s. this is what has been happening here as well.

20 years ago ost kids were not fat [with the exception of the 4 or 5 fat kids in the school. last year i drove by a grade school and i swere i couldnt believe what i was seeing--80% of the kids walking out of the school looke really fat [with big beer bellys. i was shocked.

i was gaining like 5 lbs every couple of years until i ballooned to 248. i was 185 for most of my adult life from my teen years till mid 30s. but from the mid 30s to early forties my weight sky rocked and i have always strength trained [hit since 15 years old]

i tried every diet and failed. it was only when i did the low carb diet that the weight literally melted off [170-175 lbs from 248 in under a year] and the funny part was that i am actually eating way more and the fat melted.

so,--yes-- the american diet, i believe is responsible for the problem of obesity--the europeans have always been in much better shape [fat-wise] than here in the u.s.. the u.s. didnt always have this problem. but, over the past 20 years or so it seems like our entire food source is all processed high carb. everyone in the family works so no one cooks anymore and this is a big part of the problem--30-40 years ago most households only 1 person worked and the other cooked for the family. but now who has time or effort?.

but it looks like those cheap, high carb,--processed foods, fast food, have no boundaries any longer--that is too bad. but at least the europeans with their fancy accents will have a harder time picking up our women over here--especially the french--once they balloon up at least we can compete with those accents that the women seem to dig!! there is always a silver lining!!

Dans post is pretty spot on

Here in the Uk folk gorge on crap all day long mainly in the form of refined shitty carbohydrates along the lines of sugary foods(cakes, chocolate bars etc etc) platefuls of potatoes in all kinds of forms, platefuls of rice and breads galore. These foods really spike insulin badly which ultimately leads to fat gain.

dan is also right in the fact that they are obsessed with eating low fat diets in the belief that fat is making them fat. These people spend their entire lives moving from one fad diet to the next getting nowhere! I recently picked up a RTD slim fast and read the ingredients it was full of processed crap and long life chemicals! How this shit passes as a health food for people i will never know.

Here in the UK eating healthy is hard enough because of the price of good quality organic cuts of meat, if its difficult to do that as a regular person its far harder to do as a gym goer who relies on large quantities of these foods to build a physique on.

The obesity epedemic will continue to rise so long as out of date dietery habits and myths are still preached to people by so called 'experts'. Not to mention the fact that schools rarely encourage physical activity. When i was a t secondary school people that weighed 168lbs were pretty big as most weighed including myself 135-150lbs. Nowadays the kids have stomachs bulging over their trousers and the 'skinny' ones in the group are actually overweight themselves, bit kids weighing in excess of 230 are pretty common and they have in excess of 35% bodyfat. They also get treated like 'little darlings' by their parents who give them in excess of?10 a day for lunch as they are too lazy to prepare lunches for their kids. As a result they go to chippers to buy bags of chips and cans of fizzy juice! Or a favourite of mine they head to the so called healthy 'subway' sandwitch shops! Anyone who thinks that processed meat in refined bread is healthy is fucking deluded end of! subway is no healthier than McDonalds the only difference is McDonalds doesnt pretend its a healthy food option unlike Subway.
