"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

This is one of 93 photos of Andy McCutcheon that are used in The New High-Intensity Training to illustrate the recommended exercises.

Serious question ; Does HIT training attract a certain personality trait ( Dourness ) or is such Dour personality as a result of the training itself ?

Okay , I`ll give my theories.

Im quite an outgoing personality & I believe MY training reflects such. ie; Loud music , fast paced and competitive with those around me.
I don't believe my training made me this way , I believe that my training style is an extension of my personality.
Hence meticulous slow reps and an almost clinic like environment would not realise my best efforts. Yet there are some who would thrive on such , but it would seem that those who do all have similar personality ( at least on the face of things ... no pun intended ) ... that of being introverted and `dour` ( the latter for want of a better word )

I do believe that our personality dictates our mode of training choice ( outgoing & brash to introverted & moody ) , however there is much to be said about ones environment nurturing such traits.

Great point Turpin. John Heart and I discussed this awhile ago. We both have that type of personality where we like to see how far we can take it, regardless of the pain and discomfort. I believe there does indeed seem to be a certain personality type that best meshes with HIT.

Yes it does. The clearly defined rules within HIT appeal to people who understand the world best in black and white terms.

While the scientific rationale appeals to those who pride themselves as being logical rather than abstract or instinctual thinkers.

In my mind these indicate an individual who is leaning towards being percieved as dour.

It is possible that having the mistaken believe that you are one of the few "enlightened ones" would make you take yourself too seriously. I have never seen anyone wear a shirt and tie in a gym besides some of these clinical HIT Jedi folks.

Most stupid thread so far.

Im impressed though how you find new ways to attack your secret love (maybe not so secret any more) over and over...cant imagine you have time to think about so much else.

I am guilty of giving you attention to this bad behavior, but who's perfect...

Stupid ? ... why.

Are you saying there is no correlation between such personality traits and HITters , or indeed that of other training methods.
I know of a great many Heavy Metal ( music wise ) enthusiasts who powerlift or at least train in similar manner.
I feel that most true HITters would find such music & method beneath them , and the posts by some here only serve to confirm such.

And the pictures above are hardly indicative of someone who is fun to be with are they.

You can look at it another way

People who train in a mainstream manner are likely to be more social. Social people typically tend to follow along with the group and look to the group to validate their own opinions thats just the way of things.

True Ive seen this too , however provided such method is yielding results then ones opinion is/has been validated.

Most `social` trainees will continue with a method that has no real scientific backing provided it yields results , whereas HITters will over analyse and possibly negate results for the sake of exactitude.

1. Its obvious beyond any meaningful debate that different personalities agrivate to different activities. An account and a salesman (succesful one) will have different personalities. A choosen, extreme, type of traning, will be choosen by a charactistic personalitie. We all know that already.

2. Therefore, cause its obvious, your only reason for this thread is to try to get Josh attention again to be able to start a new fight, both of you applaud by your fans.

3. And that, Mr T, I just find stupid eg doing the wrong thing and beeing aware its the wrong thing to do, is stupid per definition. Who, with a developed mind, would take pleasure in fighting another person, to win some digital applauds on an anonymous internet forum?

Hence, my comment about this thread.

Maybe Im dramatizing...or not

Yes you are dramatising Jonas , and your 1st paragraph demonstrates that there is more to this thread than Trentine , it just so happens he & the others depicted always appear dour and are HIT enthusiasts.

All of us use different tactics to focus. Some use music. Some use silence. Some like to dress in athletic wear, some in shirt and tie. I don't see how a few examples make it true for all.

There are all types of people who choose different types of exercise. If you've ever been to a marathon, you'll notice that all shapes and sizes. I don't think there's a "type".

The varying personalities on this site should be proof enough of that.

Personally I see things differently Nate.

True , This site has a lot of varying personalities , however it appears to me that the further one strays from dogmatic HIT the more relaxed/outgoing & diverse the personality ( from those Ive debated with & in private correspondence anyway ).
And on the reverse it seems the more the individual is involved in HIT the deeper thinking , more introverted & contrary the individual is.
